GCSE Results 2023

Students at our secondary schools Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (QEGS) and Banovallum are celebrating their GCSE results success

At QEGS 49% of the year group gained five or more GCSEs at grade 7 or above and the average grade of all GCSEs taken was 6.5.

Simon Furness, Headteacher at QEGS, said: “We are so proud of our Year 11 students this year. Their approach to education has been first class throughout their time at the school and we are delighted that this has been recognised through their GCSE results.

“Excellent GCSE results do not happen by chance and come about through the hard work and commitment of staff and students along with unfailing support from home.”

Top performing student, Aarushi Vinod, achieved a grade 9 in every one of her GCSE subjects. George Hunter and Sujay Venkateshan both achieved a grade 8 or 9 in each of their subjects.

Also singled out for praise were Daniel Bradbury, Emma Case, Ellen Cawley, Erin Coney, Olivia Crow, Jessica Gilbert, Kanak Gupta, Eve Herbert, Joshua Houghton, Shivani Jansari, Lola Poppy, Ethan Prior, Archie Qualtrough, Sam Thomsett and Veronica Vincent who achieved a grade 7 or above in each of their subjects.

Simon added: “We are particularly proud and impressed to see so many of our students achieving at such an exceptionally high standard and we are looking forward to welcoming many of them back to the Sixth Form in September.”

54% of students at Banovallum gained five or more GCSEs at grade 4 or above, an increase from 48% in 2019.

Banovallum Headteacher Grant Edgar said: “This year group have experienced significant disruption throughout their time at Banovallum with lockdowns and phased returns to school caused by Covid.

“As a cohort they have responded fantastically well, and they and their parents can be proud of their efforts. We, as a school, are certainly proud of what they have achieved.”

High-performing students Jay Wold, Katie Bennison-Pauls, Amber Butler-Hodgson, Kiera Cullen, Reece Pemberton, Teagan Tassera all achieved grade 9s or equivalent.

Erin Armstrong, Elsie Ball, Niall Manning, Heather Steel, Freya Moreton, Liam Walke, Zayne Rowden, Harry Brader, Charlotte Eagles, Charlie Edison, Niamh Fenn, Layla Forward, Callum Hobson, Isla McNeill and Grace Renner all achieved grade 8s or equivalent.

Grant added: “These results were secured despite the exams returning to 2019 levels which saw a shift in grade boundaries across most subjects. For example, in 2019, 125 marks were needed to gain a grade 4 in Maths, this year 158 marks were needed. Similarly, 162 marks were needed to gain a grade 4 in Science in 2019, which has risen to 189 marks this year.

“As a result of their hard work and determination our students can now go on and enter their next phase of education, employment or training fully confident and equipped to make the next steps.”

Sandra James, our CEO, said: “The students at both schools have worked incredibly hard to achieve such amazing results despite the challenges of recent years.

“I know they will all go on to be successful in whatever they decide to do next and I’m looking forward to welcoming many of them back to QEGS Sixth Form in September.

“I am also indebted to our dedicated staff who go the extra mile to ensure that every student, whatever their background, has the opportunity to flourish, to achieve, and to succeed; everything undertaken by Horncastle Education Trust should have this ambition at its heart.”
